One of the distributors that we like and are leaning toward going with are strongly suggesting we change the title of the film. At the end of the day, it’s a concern over marketability. I’ve always loved the title Psychopomp. It holds multiple meanings within the context of the story, and even though it’s a word that a large percentage of the population wouldn’t necessarily be familiar with, the fact that it starts with “psycho” quickly sets the stage that it’s a psychological thriller. But this is part of the business, and sometimes we need to make concessions for the ultimate success of the project.
I brainstormed new title ideas for weeks. Created a Google doc with over 50 new title options. Now, most of them were crap! And a handful were slight iterations on other titles. I was able to narrow that massive list down to five finalists and did an informal poll with friends, other filmmakers, and students around SCA. A clear winner rose to the top. With all this said, the title of the film moving forward is…
The Devil You Become
Now I need to start changing this everywhere… the poster, the trailer, IMDb, the film itself. What’s a few more line items on my to-do list? Haha.
